Cardiac diagnostic services include echocardiogram, electrocardiogram (EKG), and exercise treadmill test (ETT), nuclear medicine and other imaging studies. The cardiac catheterization lab provides diagnostic and emergency interventional services for patients with coronary heart disease. Cardiac catheterization is a specialized procedure that helps locate blockages in the coronary arteries of the heart. The unit is staffed by critical care registered nurses and cardiovascular technicians who have extensive experience and advanced certification in the treatment of cardiac patients, and are specially trained in catheterization lab procedures. During a heart attach, time is crucial because the arteries that have become narrowed suddenly become obstructed bya blood clot. With emergency angioplasty, a balloon-tipped catheter is used to dilate the plugged, narrowed artery and reestablish blood flow. Thrombolytic medications to dissolve the clot, commonly called clot busters, are the other option to reopen the blocked blood vessel. In addition to emergency catheterization for angioplasty and stent placement, other services also include pacemakers, and electrocardioversions for people with irregular heart rhythms.
