Swine Flu

At Providence Holy Family we are taking the following precautions:

  1. Staff are washing hands to prevent the spread of infection.

  2. Any patient or employee with symptoms suggestive of influenza (fever over 101, dry cough, runny nose, muscle aches) will be screened for the influenza virus.

  3. Any person with symptoms suggestive of swine flu who screens positive for influenza A, and who has traveled to Mexico or other endemic areas or who had contact with a confirmed case, will be placed in a private room and be treated presumptively with appropriate medications.

  4. We are keeping up to date with the latest recommendations from the CDC for additional precautions.

What are the symptoms of swine flu?

Symptoms for this type of swine flu are similar to the symptoms of the regular seasonal influenza, including fever, cough and sore throat. In addition, fatigue, lack of appetite, runny nose, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea have been reported.

What should I do to keep from getting the flu?

First and most important: wash your hands. Try to stay in good general health. Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food. Try not touch surfaces that may be contaminated with the flu virus. Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

In addition:

  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.

  • At this time, the CDC recommends that U.S. travelers avoid all nonessential travel to Mexico.
